Astros and George Springer Reportedly Avoid Arbitration With Huge Deal for 2020
By Scott Rogust
The Houston Astros have a dark cloud hovering over their organization in the form of the sign-stealing scandal. But in the meantime, even without a GM, they still need to take care of business with some of their star players.
According to MLB insider Mark Feinsand, the Astros and outfielder George Springer have settled on a $21 million deal for the 2020 season on Thursday. The contract also includes an awards package.
This past Friday, Springer was one of more than a handful of star players set to meet with their respective teams to exchange arbitration salaries for the 2020 season. Springer reportedly asked for $22.5 million, while Houston countered with $17.5 million. It's important to note that general manager Jeff Luhnow was likely involved in the negotiations, and he's since been fired.
Regardless, the Astros ensured that both sides wouldn't go to a hearing by putting pen to paper.
In 122 games this past season, Springer slashed .292/.383/.591 with 39 home runs and 96 RBI.
The Astros are looking to move on from a debilitating scandal that has since ruined their reputation among MLB clubs and fans. They hope that agreeing to terms with George Springer can help distract Astros fans from the pessimism in the meantime.
