Astros GM Guarantees Houston Will Pass Yankees and Dodgers for Best Record in MLB
By Sean Facey
Jeff Luhnow sounds plenty confident in the team he's assembled this year, but he'd better hope his mouth isn't writing checks that his players can't cash.
The Houston Astros general manager guaranteed that his team will pass both the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the league to secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
It's not out of the realm of possibility. The Astros have quite a fearsome squad. From the top down, the batting order is loaded with players like rookie slugger Yordan Alvarez to star third baseman Alex Bregman to veteran stalwart Jose Altuve. The equally terrifying starting rotation features the three-headed monster of Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole and Zack Greinke.
Of course the teams they're trying to catch are no slouches either. The Yankees own the game's best offense, which has produced 5.9 runs per game, and the Dodgers own the best pitching staff, which has registered a dazzling 3.33 team ERA this year.
Even though the Astros, who are 86-47, trail both teams by just one win, surging past them is going to be incredibly difficult. Both of them are playing quality baseball in the waning weeks of the season.
It's shaping up to be a great race for the best record in baseball. The top three teams are in a dead heat. But Luhnow had better hope that his guarantee comes to pass, otherwise he won't hear the end of it.
