Athletics Sign Matt Harvey in Unexpected Turn of Events
By Scott Rogust
Matt Harvey's tenure with the Los Angeles Angels was short-lived, but he'll get another chance on the West Coast.
MLB insider Jon Heyman reports that the Oakland Athletics have signed Harvey to a minor-league contract on Wednesday.
Harvey joined the Angels this past winter on a one-year, $11 million guaranteed contract, after performing admirably last season as a member of the Cincinnati Reds.
But it didn't work out, as he was trounced throughout the first three months of the season. Harvey accumulated a 3-5 record along with a staggering 7.09 ERA in 59.2 innings of work. As a result of his poor numbers, the team designated him for assignment before outright releasing him on July 21.
The Oakland Athletics, as of Wednesday night, sit two games back of the final Wild Card spot in the American League. Their pitching this season has been good, posting a team 4.05 ERA, the seventh-lowest in the league.
It's a low-risk situation for the Athletics, as they get Harvey on the cheap to use him as pitching depth for their playoff push.
