Auburn Head Coach Gus Malzahn's Comments on Cam Newton Prove the QB is Hungry to Prove Everyone Wrong
By Brady Williams
Cam Newton has been absolutely disrespected this offseason. Just five years after being named NFL MVP, a few injuries and a coaching change led to him being unceremoniously cut by the Carolina Panthers. Now, he's working out and doing everything he can to get signed by the right team. In an interview with Mike Tirico on "Lunch Talk Live", his former college offensive coordinator and current Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn gave some reassurance to Newton fans -- and gave his haters something to fear.
Malzahn said he's seen the current look in Newton's eye before, and he believes it's a look that could spell great things for the team that finally picks him up. He insisted that Cam is ready to prove the doubters deeply, profoundly wrong.
Newton has shown in the past that he's working as hard as possible, and Malzahn's statement just adds fuel to the fire. After all, he oversaw Newton's ascent in 2010 from junior college transfer to Heisman Trophy winner and BCS national champion. He knows better than most just how Newton responds when critics give up on him. Determination can be everything, and despite his injuries, if he he'll be a top quarterback in the NFL all over again if he finds the right home.
Newton has been too good to slip by and remain unemployed, but there aren't a lot of sure landing spots for him. He may have to win a spot from someone else, but if Malzahn is right, that could be an easy feat. After all, Newton has only had a single season under 3,000 passing yards in his career, and that season was cut short by an injury.
Newton went from being one of the most dangerous gunslingers in the league to the unemployment line, and he suddenly has a ton to prove.
But he and his former coach seem pretty confident he'll prove it in due time.
