Baker Mayfield Defends OBJ With Highly Questionable Shot at Giants Fans
By Brendan Azoff
Baker Mayfield is the poster boy for the new era quarterback in the NFL today, with the talent and the charisma that some people love and others love to hate.
He is confident, and has never shied away from the spotlight, even when his opinions may draw the ire of large groups who are listening to his every word. In a new ESPN piece previewing his mentality for the upcoming season, he took a strange shot at the New York Giants, while simultaneously defending new Browns receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
When asked about his new teammate, Mayfield stated, "He’s here to work, and he wants to be surrounded by people who love him and support him and allow him to be himself. He’s here to play in front of fans who actually care, who will actually show up to every game and pack the stadium and love him for who he is.”
These words are intended to throw shade at a Giants franchise that has struggled over the last few seasons, full of people who have criticized OBJ for his "distracting" behavior on and off the field. To be honest, however, the care level of the fanbase was hardly the problem in New York; it's a pack of passionate people who wanted nothing more than to see Beckham succeed, and were devastated by his departure.
Despite his argumentative tactics, Mayfield is clearly happy to have Beckham around, and the two of them, along with Jarvis Landry, are surely going to light up opposing defenses next year.
In front of plenty of fans.
