Kobe Bryant had a profound impact not just on basketball fans, but on humans across the world in all walks of life. That's why the news of his tragic death on Sunday afternoon sent shockwaves throughout the global news cycle. Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were among nine people killed in a helicopter crash just outside of Los Angeles. With news media outlets creating tribute videos for the basketball legend, BBC News in the United Kingdom made a hard-to-reconcile mistake. In their clip, they showed gameplay footage of LeBron James, not Bryant.

It was a brutal blunder on the part of BBC, and it circulated throughout all social media platforms. Later on in the broadcast, the media company issued an apology for their mistake.

Why would they use clips of James? Well, they obviously had the footage from LeBron's performance on Saturday against the Philadelphia 76ers. In that game, James surpassed Bryant on the all-time points scored list.

Wrong footage for the wrong segment.

Instead of ensuring everything was correct, multiple outlets rushed their content for the sole purpose of getting it out first on this tragic Sunday. This is a goofy mistake, but was endemic of a larger trend. That's bad journalism.
