Baseball Writers Select Yankees' DJ LeMahieu as New York Player of the Year
At last night's Baseball Writer's Association of America (BBWAA) dinner, numerous awards were given out to players, former MLB stars and broadcasters alike. However, there is one award that gives the ultimate bragging rights for one special player.
That award is the coveted "New York Player of the Year" award, which New York Yankees' infielder DJ LeMahieu took home this year.
A healthy number of Yankees and New York Mets players had spectacular seasons, including NL Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom and NL Rookie of the Year Pete Alonso. LeMahieu truly stood out in 2019 with his power, ability to hit for average and flexibility in the infield. The season culminated with LeMahieu placing fourth in American League MVP voting.
There were plenty of other awards given to those on New York's teams, such as "Toast of the Town and "Long and Meritorious Service."
Alonso, a breakout slugger for the Mets in his first MLB seaso, took home three awards on Saturday night to lead all New York baseball players.
Congratulations to all New York players and announcers who won awards, and good luck to all those who will be angling for top honors next year.
