Bears Agree to 3-Year Extension With Veteran LB Danny Trevathan
By Karl Rasmussen
The Chicago Bears have moved to lock up a key defensive player and keep him from hitting the open market.
Danny Trevathan, who was anticipated to be one of the headliners in this year's crop of free agent linebackers, has agreed to a three-year extension to remain in Chicago.
With so much uncertainty regarding the future of free agency due to the coronavirus, the Bears opted to play things safe and lock down their star linebacker, rather than wait for free agency to get underway and compete with teams on the open market.
Trevathan has spent the past four seasons in Chi Town. In 2019 he featured in nine games, recording 70 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and four QB hits. Across his career with the Bears he's amassed 327 tackles in 46 games.
When healthy, Trevathan has the talent to match some of the best players at his position, but he's played just one full 16-game slate since joining the Bears in 2016. His previous four seasons, all of which were spent in Denver, saw him start just 32 games.
The Bears are rolling the dice on his health, but if he can keep himself on the field the 29-year-old should serve as a reliable asset in the heart of Chicago's defense for the next few seasons.
