Bears Have No Excuse Not to Dismantle the Lions Using 3rd-String QB David Blough on Thursday
By Scott Rogust
Following this past Sunday's slate of games, all eyes were on the Thanksgiving day schedule, and the first game on the docket was less than inspiring. Originally, Mitchell Trubisky and the Chicago Bears were set to face Jeff Driskel and the Detroit Lions.
On Wednesday night, however, news broke that the Lions have resorted to starting third-string quarterback David Blough due to a hamstring injury to Driskel.
Simply put, this is a game the Bears have to win.
This will be Blough's first career start, so you'd expect the undrafted rookie to have a case of the yips. Unlike Driskell, Blough isn't known for his mobility outside of the pocket.
In his senior season at Purdue, Blough rushed for just 52 yards...on 75 attempts.
This is a matchup that the Bears defense needs to feast on like Thanksgiving dinner. Through 11 games this season, Chicago has allowed just 315.6 yards per game, which is the fourth-fewest in the entire league. Expect an even better result than that on Sunday and for the defense, as it has done all year, to put Chicago in position to win.
The rest... is up to Mitchell Trubisky.
The defense has handed him silver platters of W's all year long, and he's managed to fumble or throw them away. That can't be the case on Thursday, with the Bears on the cusp of a .500 record. Trubisky needs to step up against a porous Lions defense that has allowed the third-most passing yards per game this season (275.5).
The ball will once again be in Trubisky's hands, and if he can't carve out a win against a lowly Lions team that's utilizing their third-string quarterback, then there's truly no hope left in Chi Town.
