Bears Need to Finish the Job and Trade for Ravens Kicker Kaare Vedvik
By Sean Facey
After last year's kicking catastrophe in the postseason, the Bears have lacked any semblance of a strong kicking game. With the disgraced Cody Parkey out of the picture, most of the kickers they've brought in during the intervening weeks have been less than impressive.
They've quite literally been kicking the problem down the road, but with the start of the new season just weeks away, the team finally has a chance to remedy their kicking woes.
A couple of NFC North teams have reportedly inquired about a trade for Baltimore Ravens kicker Kaare Vedvik, which seems likely to be done by the end of the summer, and the Bears would be foolish not to be the ones to seal the deal.
Vedvik was a standout on special teams during his time at Marshall, primarily in the punting game. He had a fairly strong leg, averaging 44 yards per punt in his senior year.
He also took on kicking duties during his final year of college, nailing 41 of 42 extra points, and 10 of his 16 field goal tries.
There's really no downside to the Bears bringing him in. Though Elliott Fry and Eddy Piniero both had strong showings at the end of training camp, there's no excuse to not toss the heavily-desired Vedvik into the mix as well, especially if another NFC North team is interested in his services (it's gotta be the Vikings, right?).
As the Bears learned in the postseason last year, kicking is a beyond-vital part of the game.
If they want to at least try to avoid a repeat of their nightmare ending to the 2018 season, then they need to bring in Vedvik.
