Bears GM Ryan Pace Must Be Fired if Nick Foles Fails as Mitch Trubisky's Replacement
By Will Coleman
Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace has made a number of questionable decisions over the course of his tenure running the front office. None stand out more, however, than selecting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky with the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft over the likes of Deshaun Waton and Patrick Mahomes, but it should be clear to everyone by now that Pace is a gambling man.
Trubisky took a step back in 2019, his third year in the league, and his GM made the bold move of trading for quarterback Nick Foles this offseason. Foles has a legitimate chance to displace the 25-year old Tribusky on the depth chart in 2020, but if he flops, the Bears will surely have no choice but to declare this whole process a failure.
And that would have to require firing Pace and finding a new front office leader.
Yes, Pace won 2018 NFL Executive of the Year when Chicago made its long-waited return to the postseason as NFC North champs, but things haven't been the same for him or the team since. Trubisky isn't the sure-fire starter he looked like two seasons ago, and now, Pace is counting on Foles to change their fortunes.
The 31-year old didn't exactly pan out in Jacksonville last year, and could have a make-or-break season coming up in Chicago. Pace at least did the right thing in restructuring Foles' excessive contract following the trade, but if he can't produce more than Trubisky under center, Pace's job will justifiably be in jeopardy.
If Foles turns out anything like Mike Glennon did in Chicago, you can expect Pace to fall fully out of favor with the Bears organization. This last gamble needs to pay off for the GM if he wants to stick around. It's as simple as that.
