Bears Should Tempt Fate and Try to Sign Clay Matthews Before Packers Get a Chance
Clay Matthews was cut by the Los Angeles Rams after only one season with the team. Some NFL fans may only know the linebacker from his tenure with the Green Bay Packers that lasted from 2009-2018.
Matthews remains on the free agent market and it is possible the Packers look to bring him back to reinvigorate a defense that got embarrassed in the NFC Championship Game. One team that should beat the Packers to the punch is the Chicago Bears.
Matthews had eight sacks and 37 total tackles in 13 games with the Rams. He was let go to cut salary and will be 34 years old if the season begins on time. The Packers are certainly familiar with him and have around $11 in cap space.
The Bears have less than $1 million, but can still make moves to cut salary and make Matthews the final addition of the offseason before the draft. For example, restructuring Allen Robinson's contract should get the job done.
Matthews would add depth to a unit featuring Khalil Mack, Roquan Smith and Danny Trevathan. All three are on multi-year deals, so the team could sign Matthews to a one-year deal and add another talented veteran to the rotation.
The Bears can not only add depth with Matthews, but can drive Packers fans insane by getting him in blue and orange.
