Bears Reportedly Signing QB Teddy Bridgewater in Clear Sign That Mitchell Trubisky is Done (UPDATED)
By Sam Dunn
UPDATE: NFL insider Mike Garafolo says Teddy Brigewater will not be signing with the Bears.
After guiding the New Orleans Saints to a surprising 5-1 record while starting in place of the injured Drew Brees, it was clear that Teddy Bridgewater had earned himself a nice payday once free agency rolled around.
And now, it looks like he's found a home. Per NFL reporter and broadcaster Paul Crane, Bridgewater is hammering out a contract with the Chicago Bears.
Rejoice Bears fans. Signing Bridgewater would likely spell the end of the disastrous Trubisky era in Chicago, something fans in the Windy City have long been pushing for.
In 2019, Brigewater asserted to us all that he's absolutely not done, tossing up 1,384 yards and nine touchdowns against just two interceptions during his five starts. Bridgewater was removed from the starting role with Brees returned, but he did more than enough to justify a reasonable free agent deal from a team needing to press the reset button without panicking and trading up in the NFL Draft.
Enter Matt Nagy's Bears, who followed up 2018's NFC North title with a lackluster 8-8 campaign, with fingers increasingly pointed in Trubisky's direction all the while. In his third NFL season, Trubisky tossed just 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, failing to inspire much optimism from the fanbase.
Nagy proved with his supervision of Alex Smith in Kansas City that he can take a seemingly unspectacular known quantity at QB and fashion him into a plus performer. Turning the page with Teddy B should be met with optimism in Chi Town.
