VIDEO: Bears RB Tarik Cohen is Out Here Dropping Juneteenth Wisdom and it's Time to Listen
By Max Bevington
On Friday morning, the Chicago Bears' Twitter account posted a series of videos featuring players speaking from the heart to mark Juneteenth, the day in which the last remaining slaves in the United States were informed of their freedom by federal order in 1865. In a trio of clips, running back Tarik Cohen recongizes the the heroes of the past in the African American community who worked to abolish slavery and fought for equal rights, and spoke about what it means to celebrate June 19th in 2020.
In the second part of Cohen's video, he mentions the DuSable Museum in Chicago, which is dedicated to African-American history, culture, and art. The running back then ends his video by urging the public to go out and support Black-owned businesses and promote them to others as well.
Cohen's Bears are just one of many NFL organizations celebrating Juneteenth and using it as a platform to promote racial equality.
It's a growing trend around the league, and hopefully one that's here to stay.
Today, many of the NFL's most visible athletes are speaking out on this important day in American history to promote justice and equality for all. There will always be critics insisting that athletes ought to "stick to sports" and avoid engaging so deeply with social and political issues, but it is ultimately refreshing to see such influential figures taking a stand for what's right.
