Bears TE Trey Burton Out for Season Opener vs Packers With Groin Injury
By Scott Rogust
The Chicago Bears will be without their starting tight end for their season opener.
Prior to kickoff against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night, the Bears officially listed Trey Burton as inactive due to a groin injury.
Burton has been dealing with the issue for the past week, which as a result limited him during practices. Prior to the injury, Burton was held out of all preseason action, as were a lot of Chicago's starters.
After winning Super Bowl LII with the Philadelphia Eagles, Burton signed a four-year, $32 million contract with the Bears. Burton played in all 16 regular season games with Chicago last season, catching 54 passes for 569 yards and 6 touchdowns.
Burton was inactive for the Bears' NFC Wild Card Round matchup against the Eagles due to a sports hernia injury.
Chicago will have a next-man-up mentality on Thursday night. Adam Shaheen will likely earn starter's snaps against the Packers, while Ben Braunecker will serve as the backup tight end.
It's not an ideal start to the season for Burton, and fans will be anxious to learn more about his status following Thursday's opener.
