Ben Zobrist Making Early Impression in Latest Cubs' Rehab Stop
By Daniel Marcillo
What will the Chicago Cubs be able to get out of their 38-year old utility man?
Judging by the start of his minor league rehab assignment, there could still be life in his bat.
Ben Zobrist finally returned to baseball after being placed on the restricted list back in early May while he dealt with a divorce. He homered in each of his first two games in advanced Class A.
After spending more than three months away from the game, it's a tall task to ask Zobrist to contribute down the stretch run, but his power stroke in the minors is an encouraging sign.
It will take some more time to get up to MLB speed, but the Cubs are confident he can return before the playoffs. At 38 and in the final season of a four-year contract, he may still be fighting for another year in the show.
Zobrist was hitting .241 with only one extra base hit before his three-month absence, but he's more than just numbers on a stat sheet, as his presence in the clubhouse could prove useful in October.
He took home the MVP award in the 2016 World Series, so he boasts playoff experience. If the Cubs can get anything positive out of Zobrist, it will absolutely help their chances of bringing home another title.
