Ben Zobrist Reportedly Has 'No Plans' to Play Baseball in 2020
By Jerry Trotta
Could this news set the stage for the retirement of the player who greatly contributed to the Chicago Cubs ending their 108-year World Series title drought?
As of this writing, versatile infielder Ben Zobrist is surprisingly still living the free agent life, and MLB insider Jon Heyman understands it could stay that way for the entirety of the upcoming 2020 season.
Per Heyman, Zobrist has "no plans" on playing this campaign.
Fans in the Windy City will be quick to remember that Zobrist was sidelined for the majority of the 2019 season while reckoning with a divorce from his wife, Julianna. That clearly took a toll on him mentally, and the Cubs were gracious enough to permit him the time necessary to recover.
This particular report was a tad unexpected, as Heyman reported in October that Zobrist was considering running it back in 2020, with free agency looming, and him registering respectable numbers after returning to the club for the stretch run.
Again, it has yet to be confirmed if Zobrist will, in fact, sit out this season.
However, when you consider the variables -- he's won two world championships, was named a World Series MVP, and will turn 39 in May -- it's not farfetched to think we've seen the last of Zorilla in an MLB uniform.
