The Best 7th-Round Pick in New Orleans Saints History
By Andrew Gullotta
Fans aren't usually watching when their favorite team is selecting their seventh-round draft pick, but sometimes they wish they would've. This is the case with Saints fans when New Orleans selected Hofstra wide receiver Marques Colston with their seventh-rounder in 2006.
Right off the bat, Colston performed for the Saints. In training camp, he beat out veteran receiver Donte Stallworth for a starting job opposite Joe Horn. The big body receiver built a repertoire with new Saints quarterback Drew Brees, and it led to a great rookie campaign. He caught 70 balls for over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games. The Saints went to the NFC title game that year after finishing the season prior with an abysmal 3-13 record.
The Hofstra product wasn't just a one-hit wonder, either. He helped the Saints win their first Super Bowl in franchise history in 2009, a season in which he caught 70 passes for 1,074 yards and nine touchdowns.
Colston was the definition of consistency for Drew Brees and the Saints. He recorded six 1,000-yard seasons and amassed 72 touchdowns across 10 NFL seasons. He was also a stud in the postseason, accumulating 58 catches for 788 yards and four touchdowns in 10 games.
And SOMEHOW, the man never made a Pro Bowl. Absolute sin.
Nonetheless, at this moment, he'll be remembered as the best seventh-round pick in Saints history and it's hard to imagine someone surpassing him anytime soon.
