Best NCAA Tournament Teams of All Time
By Dylan McCaffrey
In a year in which there's no clear-cut No. 1 team in college basketball, let's take a look back at the teams that absolutely dominated the sport.
2011-12 Kentucky Wildcats
You take Anthony Davis, and put him on a John Calipari team, and you have a near unbeatable squad. This team went 38-2, undefeated in the SEC, and won the National Championship.
1989-90 UNLV Runnin' Rebels
This UNLV squad trounced Duke in the National Championship game by 40 points. They went 35-5 led by Larry Johnson, who averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds for the season.
1981-82 North Carolina Tar Heels
This Tar Heels team had all the big names before they were big. Sam Perkins (14.3 points and 7.8 rebounds) and James Worthy (15.6 points) were the leading scorers for the NCAA champs.
Oh yeah, and they had an 18-year-old Michael Jordan, who ended up hitting his first of many, many, many game winners in the championship game.
1959-60 Ohio State Buckeyes
The Ohio State Buckeyes were star heavy, with Larry Siegfried and future Hall of Famers Jerry Lucas (26 points, 14 rebounds per game) and John Havlicek leading the team to the national title.
1982-83 Houston Cougars
This was the best team to never win a national championship. Lead by Clyde Drexler and Akeem Olajuwon, the Phi Slama Jama Cougars barely fell to NC State off of a miraculous buzzer beating put-back dunk by Lorenzo Charles.
1963-64 UCLA Bruins
This Bruins squad was one of four UCLA teams to go undefeated. NBA legend Gail Goodrich and Walt Hazzard (later Mahdi Abdul-Rahman) combined for 40.1 points per game during their perfect season.
1978-79 Michigan State Spartans
This was the year that Magic Johnson would acquire his superstar status. With Johnson averaging 17.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and 8.4 assists, the Spartans won their five tournament games by an average of 20.8 points.
1971-73 UCLA Bruins
This isn't the first or last time UCLA is on this list. With so many great teams, this one sticks out for two undefeated seasons, 60 wins in a row, and two national championships.
1955-56 San Francisco Dons
Bill Russell began his winning ways in San Francisco. After winning the title in 1955, the Dons became the first undefeated team in NCAA history with their smothering defense.
1966-67 UCLA Bruins
This UCLA Bruins team was the most dominant college program of all time. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar forced rule changes with his 29 points and 15.5 rebounds per game during their undefeated title run.
