Best News of Patriots Offseason is Jameis Winston Won't Replace Tom Brady and That's Sad
By Adam Weinrib
There are plenty of directions the 2020 New England Patriots could go at quarterback, depending on their belief in internal option Jarrett Stidham.
Luckily for Pats Nation, none of the options on the table threw 30 picks at the NFL level last season.
Reports dropped on Friday indicating that the Patriots wouldn't attempt a QB swap with the Buccaneers and pursue Jameis Winston in free agency, and while this is objectively good news for the fan base, it's also distinctly sad that this is their offseason highlight thus far.
Winston is the most boom-or-bust option currently on the free agent market, but the fact that all Patriots haters would've cackled in glee at his arrival in New England should tell you all you need to know about the already-quelled maneuver.
Is there a chance that Bill Belichick could've harnessed the FSU product, post-eye surgery, into the best version of his electric self? Sure. But it's far more likely that Andy Dalton's Pro Bowl steadiness pays off in NE. This would've been a complete wild card, and it's possible that the team's mystique departed along with TB12, and wouldn't have helped Winston rise above a backup role, which is what he'll likely be paid to do this month in Jacksonville or Pittsburgh.
Bottom line, Patriots fans should be excited they shirked Winston, but they should also be depressed that this is the first thing they've done in 2020 that's made sense.
We've heard of Bill Belichick's plan endlessly, but as of now, it still seems to consist mainly of, "Let your legend walk, let the defense walk, and don't make the biggest blunder possible." Not inspiring.
