A Lot of Fans Will Hate Which QB Pro Football Focus' WAR Stat Anoints as Best in the Playoffs Since 2006
By Jerry Trotta
If you were to name one quarterback that's come through the most for his respective team in the playoffs across the last 15 seasons, Tom Brady would likely be the first name that rolls off the tongue. Though stars like Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, Peyton (and Eli) Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees come to mind, the former longtime New England Patriot has won three Super Bowls -- and appeared in three others -- since the 2006 season.
However, according to Pro Football Focus' innovative wins above replacement (WAR) calculation, Brady does not reign supreme in this category. Rather, the feat anoints Rodgers as the most valuable performer in crunch time.
Stay off NFL Twitter, folks, because it's bound to be nothing but hostile for the next several hours
This finding does insist that Rodgers, in some ways, is somehow still underrated and unappreciated. The Green Bay Packers haven't always done right by the two-time MVP, and, more often than not, he overcomes his tension with the organization and the lack of overall talent he's working with on offense.
In 18 career postseason contests, Rodgers holds a 10-8 record while throwing for 5,027 yards and 40 touchdowns compared to just 12 interceptions. That win-loss mark doesn't do his spectacular play justice by any means, and this PFF WAR stat proves that. Those ridiculously efficient numbers equate to a remarkable 100 QBR, for crying out loud.
That won't satisfy those stanning for TB12, Brees, Peyton, or Russ, of course.
Sure, only having one Super Bowl hurts Rodgers' resume as far as the discussion of all-time greats is concerned, but there really is no denying that his greatness on the biggest stage deserves more than one ring.
