Bill Belichick Expected to Serve as His Own Defensive Coordinator Next Year for Patriots
By Seth Carlson
Who needs a defensive coordinator when you are at the head of one of the greatest dynasties to ever reign over the world of pro sports?
That seems to be the attitude of New England Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick, who will be assuming defensive coordinator duties himself for the upcoming season, according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe. This is after former defensive coordinator Greg Schiano departed the team after less than two months in the position.
New England's defense finished 16th in DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average, a popular benchmark for efficiency) last season according to FootballOutsiders.com. This was the work of former play-caller Brian Flores, now the Miami Dolphins' Head Coach. The pinnacle of their defensive season came in Super Bowl LIII, in which the team limited the prolific Rams offense to just three points in winning their sixth title. Surely, the veteran coach Belichick had a hand in the defensive dominance as well.
Belichick is clearly a defensive-minded coach first and foremost, and has made his imprint clear on that side of the ball for the Patriots since he became the boss in 2000. With his knack for drafting and developing starters like clockwork, expect the model of consistency to continue in New England.
