Bill Belichick Says He'll Be More Involved in Patriots Defense This Season
By Jerry Trotta
Bill Belichick, as we know, is no stranger to coping with coaching changes. After all, his assistants and coordinators are often some of the most sought-after figures in the league each passing season.
In 2019, the story was no different as the Patriots head coach saw his linebacker's coach, Brian Flores, leave to take the HC position for the Miami Dolphins. Belichick and Co. subsequently promoted former New England linebacker Jerod Mayo to replace Flores.
To nobody's surprise, the six-time Super Bowl champ won't fully hand the reigns over to Mayo and during an interview with NFL Network's (and former Patriot) Willie McGinest, Belichick himself said that he plans to have a significant role on the defensive side of the ball in the upcoming season.
“I think I’ll be more involved this year defensively than I was in recent years,” said Belichick, “although I’ve always tried to be involved in all aspects of the game, especially the defensive side of the ball. But this year it will be a little bit more, but I’m enjoying it and eventually I’ll have less of a role. For right now, just to try and get things underway this year, I’ll try to be as involved as I can.”
The Foxborough faithful will be quick to remember that Flores, though he didn't hold the defensive coordinator title, still chaperoned a plethora of the Pats' defensive schemes and responsibilities during his three-year stint as the LB's coach.
Almost everybody understands that Belichick boasts an all-time great defensive mind and if him reportedly being more hands-on in 2019 doesn't fire Patriots Nation up, then nothing will.
