Bill O'Brien Getting Promoted Instead of Fired Proves the Texans Are a Unique Disaster
By Jerry Trotta
Only the Houston Texans ineptitude would manage to overshadow this week's Super Bowl festivities.
On Tuesday, it was astonishingly confirmed that Houston would be promoting head coach Bill O'Brien -- who, let's be honest, doesn't even deserve that title anymore. O'Brien will now act as both the Texans' head coach and general manager.
The sad part of it all is that we aren't the least bit surprised that the Texans opted to throw logic out the window and give the keys of the organization to O'Brien. It further proves they are an unmitigated disaster. Think about the lack of rational that accompanied this impossible, but inevitable promotion.
There aren't enough words to explain why O'Brien was deserving of the axe across his six years in H-Town, so, for the sake of time, let's keep the references to recent events.
O'Brien's team managed to fumble a 24-0 second quarter lead in the Divisional Round against the Chiefs, just one week after falling behind 16-0 at home to a sophomore quarterback in Josh Allen in the Wild Card Round. Somehow, those events led to him becoming the only skipper in the NFL to carry a GM title.
Say it louder for the people in the back!
Being outscored 51-7 in less than three quarters alone is a fireable offense. The fact that O'Brien played a prominent role in that collapse-- coaching afraid by kicking field goals and his indefensible fake punt -- should have sealed his fate.
The Texans win football games in spite of their HC. They muster records north of .500 because of Deshaun Watson's superpowers. Sorry, Houston. But Tuesday's news confirms that you will be handicapped to mediocrity years into the future.
