Bill O'Brien Announces Texans Will Not Have GM in 2020
By Scott Rogust
The Houston Texans are coming off the most embarrassing loss in franchise history on Sunday, blowing a 24-0 lead in what becam a 51-31 playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite the defeat, however, their peculiar front office setup will remain in place next season.
On Monday, head coach and de facto GM Bill O'Brien revealed there will be no changes to Houston's current organization structure. That means no full-time, dedicated general manager is to be hired.
Last year, the Texans opted to fire GM Brian Gaine after a power struggle with O'Brien. Houston stood by their head coach, and were looking to hire New England Patriots executive Nick Caserio to succeed Gaine. That hunt was scuttled, as the Patriots filed a tampering grievance on the grounds that Caserio was still under contract and not granted permission to speak with another team.
The team traded away defensive end and former first overall pick Jadeveon Clowney to the Seattle Seahawks for pennies on the dollar. Houston did acquire a stud left tackle in Laremy Tunsil, but that came at the expense of two future first-round picks. To say the least, the road ahead will be a tough one -- but the team is still sticking to its guns when it comes to its front office.
