This Bills-Redskins Trade Involving Trent Williams Could Actually Work
By Scott Rogust
Trent Williams is yet another special player the Washington Redskins have squandered. He made seven Pro Bowls in his 10-year career with the team and proved to be one of the best left tackles in the NFL. And of course, owner Dan Snyder screwed it all up.
On Tuesday, Williams announced his desire to either be traded or released by the Redskins. That statement alone killed any leverage Washington might've had in trade discussions.
With this news, contending teams will be clogging up the Redskins' phone lines to discuss a trade. The Buffalo Bills should be calling them frequently to try and get a deal done.
The Bills were one of the biggest winners of the NFL offseason. They traded for a stud wide receiver in Stefon Diggs and watched the rival New England Patriots lose Tom Brady to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, they need to truly put themselves over the edge, and what better way to do so then add Williams to protect quarterback Josh Allen's blindside?
As of this writing, Buffalo has $26 million in cap space, which makes it easy for them to add Williams' $14.5 million cap charge and potentially sign him to a contract extension. Given that information, the Bills won't have to surrender any players. Rather, they can send their 2020 fifth-round pick (No. 167 overall) to Washington in exchange for Williams.
The Redskins won't receive a premium draft pick for Williams, but at this stage, a fifth-round pick is better than nothing. Bills Mafia would go crazy if this trade happens, which is a pretty scary thought when you think about it.
