3 Bills Veterans Who Could Be Cut After the NFL Draft
By Scott Rogust
The Buffalo Bills have one of the more complete rosters in today's NFL. Even after their acquisition of Stefon Diggs for a bevy of draft picks, the Bills still hold seven selections in the draft, which should help them re-tool and grow depth elsewhere. With the influx of rookies, Buffalo will have to make some difficult choices when they have to trim the roster down to 53, however.
Here are three veterans the Bills could cut ties with following the NFL Draft.
3. DE Trent Murphy
Even though their defense was dominant in the 2019 season, the Bills pass rush could still use some help. Luckily for them, they could be in line to select a defensive end with their first pick in the second round. If general manager Brandon Beane goes through with this plan, he will have to show one edge rusher the door. Trent Murphy comes to mind, because he's set to become a free agent after 2020 and only accounts for $1.75 million in dead money (the team will save over $8 million with the move). It's going to be a tough decision either way because Murphy was a very productive last season.
2. RB TJ Yeldon
The Bills have their certified workhorse back in Devin Singletary, but the depth behind him isn't the greatest. Buffalo can easily solve this problem in the draft, with guys like JK Dobbins, Travis Etienne and Zack Moss expected to be available in the second round (and some of them and others maybe in the third!). If the Bills do that, then they have no need for veteran TJ Yeldon. He proved to be a serviceable back with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but once he trekked up to Buffalo last year, he didn't serve much of a purpose behind Singletary and Frank Gore. Yeldon will only account for $250,000 in dead money and the Bills will save over $1.6 million, so cutting ties will be easy.
1. CB Josh Norman
Yes, he just signed with the Bills this offseason, but Josh Norman has shown that he's a shell of his former self. Just last season with the Washington Redskins, Norman was relegated to the No. 4 cornerback spot on the depth chart, and when he was on the field, he was torched by opposing wide receivers. The Bills will obviously look for a quality cornerback to pair alongside Tre'Davious White in the draft, so don't be surprised if Norman is a training camp casualty later this summer. After all, he only accounts for $1.5 million in dead money, so it's not all that bad.
