Blue Jays Prospect Bo Bichette Comments on Not Being Promoted to MLB
By Scott Rogust
In years past, Major League Baseball was a special kind of strict when it came to promoting top prospects (i.e. service-time manipulation). Now, teams have become more relaxed in calling up their top minor league talents.
Yet, one prospect feels he's been deserving of a promotion for quite some time now.
While speaking with David Singh of Sportsnet, Toronto Blue Jays prospect Bo Bichette expressed frustration with his lack of call-up, citing his statistics and traits as reasons why he deserves to join the major league roster.
Bichette gave light to his frustrations after sending out a vague tweet following the demotion of slugger Rowdy Tellez.
The 21-year-old has put up strong numbers with both Advanced-A Dunedin and Triple-A Buffalo. Through 188 at-bats, Bichette has a .319 batting average and .889 OPS, along with 5 home runs and 28 RBI.
Despite being ranked the No. 8 overall prospect in the league, Bichette's path to the show has been roadblocked by Freddy Galvis, who this year has posted 15 homers and 46 RBI on a .269 batting average. Unless Galvis is moved at the July 31 trade deadline, he's Toronto's starting shortstop for the remainder of a lost season, with no playoff berth within reach.
Expect Bo Bichette to get his shot with Toronto next season, and probably get the call when rosters expand later on in the year.
