Bo Bichette Seems a Bit Salty on Twitter After Not Making MLB Leap Following Rowdy Tellez Demotion
By Sean Facey
When the Blue Jays demoted Rowdy Tellez, it seemed as though perhaps the team might be willing to take a chance on future star Bo Bichette for his big league debut.
At least, Bichette seems to have thought so.
Unfortunately for him, he didn't get the call, and that seems to have gotten under his skin, based on one of his recent tweets.
It's hard to blame him for being upset. He's been playing quality baseball in Triple-A this season, slashing .298/.360/.482 with five home runs and 27 runs batted in through 43 games.
The most likely scenario for the lack of a promotion is service time manipulation. Calling him up now would mean Toronto would draw the short end of the stick in terms of how many years of control they'd have on Bichette.
The Blue Jays have been the subject of much scrutiny for their manipulation of service time with their rookie stars. They notably didn't call up Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at the end of the 2018 season, and they didn't bring him up to the MLB until late in April of this year in order to gain an extra year of control.
But just as it's hard to blame Bichette for being upset, so too is it easy to sympathize with the Blue Jays. Calling up baseballs 12th overall prospect in a lost season is of no benefit to them, even if the fans demand to see him play.
Freddy Galvis also stands in his way at the shortstop position, so unless the Blue Jays make a move to send him away at the deadline, Bichette can expect to stay salty.
For now, he'll just have to continue to play his game and bide his time in the hopes that opportunity will finally come knocking.
