Bobby Abreu's Hall of Fame Case Is Actually Stronger Than You Think
By Andy Loughmiller
The Baseball Hall of Fame is a sacred ground, and one that every MLB player hopes to one day reach.
Retired right fielder Bobby Abreu isn't going to get to Cooperstown on the normal ballot. This shouldn't come as a surprise. But the veteran's committee could give him the nod down the line based on the sustained success he had throughout his professional career. In fact, some of his plaudits might surprise you.
That is some good company to have. NINE 20/20 seasons? That's tremendously impressive. And his 60.0 career WAR is actually higher than Hall of Famers like Yogi Berra, Mike Piazza, Vladimir Guerrero, and Whitey Ford, as well as future inductees like Ichiro and David Ortiz.
Abreu has an authentically solid resume. Getting his name on the ballot at all should be an honor by itself, so even while he's a serious long shot to make it in during the normal vote, he may just have a chance to get the call in the more distant future.
While the two-time All-Star isn't going to get into the Hall of Fame in the next decade, he could slip into Cooperstown via the Eras Committee one day. He really could.
Abreu was recently inducted into the Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Fame in 2019, but that is an honor that doesn't sniff the prestige that comes with being a member of baseball royalty forever. The former outfielder's Hall of Fame case is actually stronger than you'd think. Never say never!
