3 Bold Predictions for the Eagles in the NFL Draft
By Brady Williams
The Philadelphia Eagles have some very specific needs heading into the NFL Draft. With a number of holes to fill, every pick will be crucial in getting this roster back to the Super Bowl.
All that pressure means we could be seeing some surprising moves out of general manager Howie Roseman. Here are three bold predictions for the Eagles in the draft.
3. They Don't Address the Cornerback Issue
The Eagles lost Malcolm Jenkins this offseason. That's a huge blow to their secondary. They've added Darius Slay, which does a lot to help, but they need depth, and many fans figure they might seek to add that in the draft. However, they also need to drastically improve their linebacking and wide receiving corps. They don't have a high-caliber guy like Slay to at least provide some kind of relief at that position. Their first few picks may have to focus on wideout, linebacker and OL before the Birds take a cornerback.
2. Pick No. 52 is Used on a QB
Carson Wentz is great, but he's been absent in quite a few games due to injuries. Whether fans want to acknowledge it or not, he has an injury history that seems to be consistent with each passing year. With that in mind, the it's obvious that the Eagles need a backup quarterback, and their own Super Bowl win in 2018 is the best proof that it helps to have a good one. They can't get a surefire backup in the later rounds, but with COVID-19 hurting a lot of top quarterbacks' draft stock, someone like Jake Fromm should be available for the taking at No. 52.
1. Philadelphia Trades up for CeeDee Lamb
Everybody knows the Eagles need a wide receiver, and they need one now. Wentz doesn't have any reliable targets unless you consider Alshon Jeffery and DeSean Jackson that, and the No. 21 pick isn't expected to land them a top-tier talent. The 49ers seem to be open to getting out of one or both of their first-round picks, and the Eagles could swoop in with a hefty offer to move up to No. 13. Philadelphia is reportedly interested in CeeDee Lamb, and there's no way they'll find that kind of impact player at No. 21 or later.
