Red Sox Release Statement in Wake of New Cheating Allegations
By Jerry Trotta
As of Tuesday, Major League Baseball has another sign-stealing chronicle to sort out.
Per a scathing report published on The Athletic, the Boston Red Sox improperly used their video replay room to steal signs in 2018, their World Series-winning campaign. The allegations suggest that the organization used the chamber to communicate pitching signs to baserunners.
In the wake of the damning report, the Red Sox released a statement in which they professed their intentions to "fully cooperate with MLB" during their investigation.
The league also weighed in on the shocking development with a statement of their own to confirm their imminent investigation.
"The Commissioner made clear in a September 15, 2017 memorandum to clubs how seriously he would take any future violation of the regulations regarding use of electronic equipment or the inappropriate use of the video replay room. Given these allegations, MLB will commence an investigation into this matter."
It's worth noting that Boston would have been unable to deploy their cheating scheme during the postseason portion of 2018, as the league was thoroughly monitoring video replay rooms during October.
Still, this is only the beginning of what is sure to be a comprehensive inquiry. There are surely many more shoes to drop.
