3 Draft Day Trade Scenarios That the Browns Should Consider
By Michael Luciano
The Cleveland Browns have the chance to leapfrog the Pittsburgh Steelers in the hypothetical AFC North power rankings provided new GM Andrew Berry knocks it out of the park on Draft night. The Browns currently have the No. 10 pick in the draft, but their needs at linebacker and left tackle could prompt them to either trade up and get "their guy" or trade down to accumulate picks. The Browns shouldn't feel tied to No.10, and they should try to pull off one of these three daring maneuvers.
3. Trading Down For Kenneth Murray or Patrick Queen
Clemson's Isaiah Simmons is clearly the top linebacker in this class, but the next two highest-rated players at that position are LSU's Patrick Queen and Oklahoma's Kenneth Murray. After that, there is a cavernous drop off in talent. The Browns need to be aggressive when it comes to replacing Joe Schobert, as Mack Wilson and Sione Takitaki by themselves are not enough. If Simmons is gone by No. 10 (he will be), Cleveland should drop into the 20s, picking up a stable of picks along the way, to take either Murray or Queen.
2. Trading up for an Offensive Lineman
If you asked 10 different analysts to rank the consensus top four offensive tackles in this draft (Alabama's Jedrick Wills, Louisville's Mekhi Becton, Georgia's Andrew Thomas, Iowa's Tristan Wirfs), you'll get 10 different answers. What isn't up for debate, however, is that several teams in the top half of the draft, Cleveland included, need an offensive tackle. Rather than praying their favorite tackle falls to them, the Browns need to be aggressive and trade up, as this allows them to secure the rights to their preferred tackle while preventing o-line needy teams below them from beating them to the post via a trade of their own.
1. Trading up for Isaiah Simmons
Simmons might be the most interesting player in this draft, as he managed to fit the athleticism and speed of a defensive back into the body of a linebacker. Simmons will almost assuredly be off the board when the Browns pick at No. 10, but adding him into an already fast, aggressive defense could be that one piece that takes them over the top. Berry could get his tenure in Cleveland off to a flying start by shocking the world and compiling the picks needed to move up and make Simmons a Brown.
