Braves Acquire Anthony Swarzak From Mariners for Arodys Vizcaino and Jesse Biddle
By Parker White
In an attempt to fix their disappointing bullpen, which ranks 21st in baseball with a 4.54 ERA, the Atlanta Braves made a trade with the Seattle Mariners on Monday.
Atlanta is sending right-handed reliever Arodys Vizcaino and left-handed reliever Jesse Biddle to Seattle for veteran RHP Anthony Swarzak and cash considerations.
Essentially, this is a deal that swaps Biddle for Swarzak, as Vizcaino is out for the remainder of the 2019 season after undergoing shoulder surgery and is an impeding free agent. His addition to the deal seems to be purely financial.
Neither reliever is having a particular good season, as Swarzak holds a 5.27 ERA over 15 appearances, allowing 11 runs (8 earned) on 14 hits over 13.2 innings with 17 strikeouts. This is the second straight season Swarzak hasn't lived up to the billing, as he made 29 appearances for the Mets in 2018 and had a whopping 6.15 ERA and 1.59 WHIP.
Swarzak joined the Mariners as part of the Robinson Cano trade this winter.
Biddle was a bright spot in the Braves bullpen last year, but in 15 appearances this season he holds a 5.40 ERA and 2.40 WHIP, allowing 11 runs (7 earned) on 18 hits and 10 walks over 11.2 innings. He was DFA'd by the club last week.
