Braves Agree to Terms With First-Round Pick Shea Langeliers
By Michael Luciano
The Atlanta Braves continued to stockpile top young talent by adding one of the best catchers across all of amateur baseball last week with one of their multiple first-round selections. Even better? They actually signed him this year.
After missing out on talented right-hander Carter Stewart, who will start his professional career in Japan, Atlanta agreed to terms with former Baylor catcher Shea Langeliers, who was selected with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2019 draft, the compensation for 2018's bummer.
Langeliers was one of the most consistent catchers in all of college baseball, posting a .847 OPS or greater in each of his three seasons in Waco while crushing 31 home runs.
Langeliers may not be the most refined defensive catcher, but he projects as a low-floor bat with plenty of experience who should fly through the minor leagues with ease.
I bet you thought the offensive parts of the Braves farm system dried up after Ronald Acuña Jr., Austin Riley, and Ozzie Albies made the big leagues. In fact, Atlanta still has one of the most robust groups of farmhands in the entire league, and this will only help the next generation.
