Braves Fans Are Raising Money for One of Their Minor Leaguers in Need During Coronavirus Crisis
By Jack Murphy
While there's been much discussion about the MLB season being postponed in the wake of the coronavirus' spread, less ink has been spilled about minor-league baseball's cancellation as well. Unlike major leaguers, minor-league ballplayers do not make seven figures, and won't be getting paid as the delay in game action spills into the next few months.
Carlos Martinez, a player in the Atlanta Braves system, is one of those struggling minor leaguers. Braves Twitter found out about the difficult times Martinez is going through, and very generously decided to help out.
Martinez is back in his home country of Colombia during the outbreak, and everything is very expensive down there. It is very hard for him to get by while he is out of his job playing baseball.
Braves Twitter discovered Martinez and his needs through an account known as "Adopt a Minor Leaguer," which is a Twitter account dedicated to connecting underpaid minor league ballplayers to fan sponsors.
One member of the Braves' fan community posted the Venmo and PayPal of Martinez in hopes of getting others to easily donate to the Colombian-born ballplayer. The efforts made by those involved with Braves Twitter have already contributed $200 and counting.
The COVID-19 outbreak has been a difficult time for everybody. Even though everyone has their individual struggles, we're all coming together in many ways to help as many people as possible. Stay classy, Braves fans.
