It's always awful when you find out your beloved pet has passed away, but the details of the death of Freddie Freeman's cat proves that some people are just monsters.

Freeman's wife, Chelsea, took to Instagram on Tuesday to confirm in a gutting post the couple's cat Benji died after getting hit by a car. She claims the driver of the vehicle, who obviously felt something when they made contact with the feline, sped off like an animal.

By the time the couple found Benji, it was too late.

That's so heartbreaking and beyond disturbing. How cold-blooded do you have to be to not stop and check on the status of the cat?

For this to happen, especially during the tough times we're all facing, makes things even more tragic.

Say this louder for the people in the back: pets are people and they deserve to be treated as such. Benji's owners undoubtedly gave her the world, and she deserved so much better in the end. Hang in there, Freddie.
