Braves Place Sean Newcomb on 7-Day Concussion IL and Recall Righty Huascar Ynoa
By Parker White
On Wednesday, the Atlanta Braves placed left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb on the seven-day concussion IL, backdated to June 18. To take his spot on the active roster, the Braves have recalled right-handed pitcher Huascar Ynoa from Triple-A Gwinnett.
This comes after Newcomb was hit in the head by a line drive on Saturday by Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto. Newcomb has gone through the concussion protocol and passed all the tests which took place immediately on Saturday.
It appears the Braves are just using what the rules allow, and after the bullpen had to pick up five innings on Tuesday, they needed another arm in the pen to close out their series with the New York Mets.
On top of needing another arm after multi-inning pitchers Touki Toussaint and Josh Tomlin were used last night, Braves manager Brian Snitker was impressed with Ynoa, who made his debut last week and was phenomenal.
Ynoa made his debut on Sunday and tossed two scoreless innings with two strikeouts against the Phillies. The 21-year-old has great stuff, including a fastball that touches the upper-90's. Ynoa has great upside, especially if the Braves use him in the bullpen.
