Braves Reportedly Eyeing Blue Jays Righty Reliever Joe Biagini
By Parker White
The Atlanta Braves have a strong desire for some additional bullpen help, and there's been plenty of conversations between them and the Toronto Blue Jays as the trade deadline approaches. And while you'd think Atlanta is heavily targeting closer Ken Giles, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the NL East leaders are taking a look at Joe Biagini.
Biagini is under team control through the 2022 season, which should make him valuable to a number of teams. The former Rule 5 Draft selection has made 48 appearances this season and owns a 3.75 ERA with 48 strikeouts over 48 innings.
The 29-year-old had a very successful rookie season, but when Toronto tried to move him back to the starting rotation (where he started his career), he failed miserably, landing him back with the relief unit. He has bounced back this season, as his strikeouts are up and his WHIP (1.33) is at its best since 2016.
While Biagini could prove to be a reliable middle-innings reliever in Atlanta, you wonder where Atlanta is going to get that much-needed closer. Could they acquire Biagini along with Giles from Toronto? Given their loaded farm system that currently contains more young pitching talent than they'll ever roster themselves, it can't be ruled out as a possibility.
