Braves Sign Pair of Intriguing UDFAs Following 2020 Draft
By Alexander Wolz
Due to a massively constrained MLB Draft this year, many of the league's teams have been busy in the aftermarket signing undrafted free agents. After drafting four players to their roster, including three pitchers, the Atlanta Braves have been one team that's added plenty of extra talent in the event's aftermath.
The Braves continued their spree by signing a pair of intriguing prospects in Antonio Barranca and Cam Shepherd on Thursday that look bound to develop into valuable pieces in the Atlanta system.
Barranca has quite a resume to his name. The multipurpose catcher, corner infielder and outfielder is quite a steal for the Braves. Coming from Calvert Hall College High School, Barranca has a dominant plate presence with impressive power and barrel speed. That raw power will fit right in with a team that is already one of the NL's strongest at the plate.
Atlanta also added Cam Shepherd, a shortstop from the University of Georgia. There was a lot of excitement about Shepherd coming into the Draft -- he earned high rankings from Baseball America.
Shepherd was actually drafted in the 20th round last year by the Toronto Blue Jays, but vowed to return to Georgia for his senior season instead. During that time he further cemented his value as one of the nation's best infielders, and the Braves should be happy to have him on their side.
After investing primarily in pitching in the Draft, the Braves have added impressive pieces to the fold both in the field and at the plate.
