Phillies Reportedly Trade for Mets Pitcher Jason Vargas
By Mark Powell
The Mets busy trade deadline continues.
Just one day after shocking the baseball world and acquiring now-former Blue Jays ace Marcus Stroman for a couple of pitching prospects, they're in the business of selling a pitcher of their own.
Jason Vargas, fresh off a respectable start against the Pittsburgh Pirates in what resulted in a Mets sweep, has been traded to the division rival Philadelphia Phillies. Despite the Mets' reported qualms of trading with the cross-town rival Yankees, they don't seem to have an issue dealing with arguably their most hated rival.
Vargas has a 4.01 ERA on the season despite being seen as the weakest link in the Mets starting rotation to start the campaign. He's certainly had a tumultuous relationship with the New York media, but with a team as desperate for pitching as the Phillies are, this is a no-brainer, especially given the fact that the Mets asking price was reportedly low for the veteran righty.
The return is Double-A catcher Austin Bossart, currently sporting a .638 OPS.
Vargas' past 15 starts include a 3.32 ERA and just 64 hits in 84 innings pitched. Not bad at all.
Only one question remains in Queens: Will Noah Syndergaard be next?
