Brett Favre's Current Pick for NFL Coach of the Year is Pretty Surprising
By Chris Russo
Few people know the game of football better than Brett Favre. But, when it comes to his picks for awards, what in the world is he thinking here?
Favre says his current pick for NFL Coach of the Year would be Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden. Gruden? Sure, the Raiders have looked FAR better than we could have imagined, but to give him Coach of the Year?
The Hall of Fame quarterback made the comment on Sirius XM NFL Radio. Favre and Gruden actually spent their first three years with the Green Bay Packers together. Favre grew to take Don Majkowski's job at QB in 1992, while Gruden moved from offensive assistant that year to wide receivers coach in 1993 and 1994.
The comment may come as a bit of a surprise, particularly considering Packers rookie head coach Matt LaFleur's 8-2 record this year. However, Gruden has pushed past the drama of Antonio Brown and criticism over the Khalil Mack trade to lead the Raiders to a record of 5-4. After their primetime win over the Chargers, they sit just half a game behind the Kansas City Chiefs for the best record in the AFC West.
The Raiders have won two games in a row and four of their last six. They are also 4-1 at home this season, with their only loss coming to the Chiefs. With a return to form for Derek Carr, a breakout rookie year for running back Josh Jacobs, and seven sacks by Benson Mayowa, the Raiders are looking tough.
However, if the team wants to prove Favre's pick right, they're going to have to go on a serious run late in the season for Gruden to earn the Coach of the Year honor.
