Brewers Place Jimmy Nelson Back on IL After Brief and Unsuccessful Return
By Jerry Trotta
If there's any big leaguer that you don't have to lecture about the sheer brutality of injuries, it's Brewers right-hander Jimmy Nelson.
The 30-year-old recently returned to the mound for the first time since the 2017 season -- after missing all of 2018 due to reconstructive shoulder injury -- and has looked like a shell of his former self, positing an 0-2 record and 9.75 ERA in four appearances (three starts) for Milwaukee.
Though it's not a shoulder ailment, Nelson faces another potentially lengthy spell on the sidelines as the club has placed him on the 10-day injured list with right elbow effusion, retroactive to June 26.
The move comes just a few days after Nelson walked 4 batters in just 2 innings out of the bullpen. That brought his tally to 14 base-on-balls in as many innings pitched.
Here's Brewers manager Craig Counsell, clearly distressed, while discussing the status of the veteran right-hander.
You can see it in Counsell's eyes just how bad he and the rest of the organization want Jimmy to return to his 2017 form in which he recorded a 12-6 record and 3.49 ERA in 175.1 innings of work.
It's too early to tell when he'll be ready to pitch for Milwaukee again, but it will almost certainly not be until well after the All-Star break.
