Brewers Reportedly Acquire Starting Pitcher Jordan Lyles in Trade With Pirates
By Karl Rasmussen
It's officially trade season folks, and after the first blockbuster deal went down on Sunday afternoon, fans have been eagerly awaiting more transactions.
Well, this latest deal may not jump off the page to the average fan, but the Brewers made a wise move and acquired Jordan Lyles from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Brewers lost three starting pitchers to injury over the past week, so the addition of Lyles provides them with some much-needed reinforcements for their rotation.
Going the other way in the deal is Cody Ponce, a 25-year-old pitching prospect currently practicing his trade at Double-A. He has a 3.29 ERA with 44 strikeouts through 38.1 innings of work this season.
Lyles has battled injuries this season but has been effective when healthy. Despite owning a 5.36 ERA, Lyles has 90 strikeouts in 82.1 innings of work, good for a 9.8 K/9 ratio.
The 28-year-old spent some time with Milwaukee last season, appearing in 11 games of relief work and striking out 22 over 16.1 innings. He'll look to replicate that performance, albeit as a starter, during his second stint at Miller Park.
