We are approaching the start of July and Yankees ace Luis Severino has yet to throw a meaningful pitch, as a lat injury has kept the 25-year-old ace from playing up until this point.
While Severino had begun a throwing program earlier in the season, he suffered a setback that pushed his expected 2019 debut back by a considerable margin. But could that have been avoided?
It seems so. Yankees GM Brian Cashman, playing the role of Captain Obvious, said that the Yankees should have done an MRI before letting Severino throw.
Cashman said “with hindsight” #Yankees should have done MRI in Severino before allowing a throwing program. “Clearly he should not have started his throwing program.” Said still expects Severino to pitch this year.

Gee, you think? Did the Yankees hire the Mets medical staff this offseason?
According to manager Aaron Boone, Severino's lat is 90 percent healed, but he won't start throwing until he is 100 percent healthy.
Luis Severino has not been able to throw off a mound yet. He was shut down due to soreness and had another MRI. Aaron Boone said Severino’s lat is 90 percent healed but he won’t throw until it is 100 percent.

The absence of Severino, who went 19-8 with a 3.35 ERA last year, is being felt more and more with every JA Happ home run and Stephen Tarpley start.
The Yankees could get a major boost when an elite starter returns to action, but his mysterious lat injury is making his status for the 2019 season a complete guessing game.
