Brian Cashman Says Yankees Will Have Interest in Madison Bumgarner This Offseason
By Jerry Trotta
The New York Yankees are interested in just about every high-profile pitcher on the free agent market.
Roughly 48 hours after GM Brian Cashman asserted that the Pinstripes will be in the Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg sweepstakes, he stated that the club is also interested in Madison Bumgarner.
"He's been a tremendous player for a long time," the 52-year-old exec told The San Francisco Chronicle. "We're going to look at everybody that's out there, obviously. Starting pitching is important, and he's been one of the game's better starting pitchers for a long time. So we'll certainly have a conversation."
Cashman went on to praise Bumgarner's historic postseason prowess, where he's logged a 2.11 ERA across 102.1 innings.
"It's nice to know they can pitch in October," he continued. "No doubt about it. It's just basically trying to project what they can do for you moving forward in the present. Everybody knows his mental fortitude is obviously there."
MadBum isn't the same pitcher that he was when he helped lead the Giants to three World Series titles in a span of five seasons (2010-2014), but he flaunts invaluable experience in October compared to a Yankees staff that is alarmingly inconsistent.
If the Yankees aren't able to meet the contract demands of a Cole or Strasburg, you can get your bottom dollar that they will seriously inquire about bringing Bumgarner aboard.
