Brian Urlacher Not Satisfied With Bears Decision to Sign Robert Quinn
By Brady Williams
On March 17th, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Chicago Bears had signed veteran defensive end Robert Quinn. Paired with an already-great defense, Quinn figures to have an opportunity wreak some serious havoc in the NFC North. However, to Bears legend Brian Urlacher's mind, the move was a misstep.
He conceded that while he was a fan of Quinn's abilities on the field, the $70 million contract he inked was a little less exciting. In particular, Urlacher felt that maybe the funds could have been better allocated elsewhere.
Urlacher pointed out how Khalil Mack has already been extremely expensive after the Bears made him the highest-paid defensive player in football history. He also mentioned defensive back Akiem Hicks, who is on a four-year, $48 million deal of his own. Even with both of those guys coming up big for Chicago, Urlacher isn't sure the team needs still-more help at the front end of their defense in the form of Quinn.
Quinn has been an outstanding player in the league, and just last season recorded 11.5 sacks for the Cowboys. He's worth a $70 million contract for a team that needs a boost on the edge, but Urlacher clearly thinks spreading the wealth elsewhere would be a smarter call for GM Ryan Pace. Urlacher knows a thing or two about success in the Windy City; in this case, Bears fans ought to hope he's not quite right about all this.
