Brian Windhorst Reveals What a Jayson Tatum Contract Extension Will Cost the Celtics
By Jerry Trotta

After enjoying a breakout season in 2019, it appears Jayson Tatum will become a rich man in the near future.
During an appearance on SportsCenter, ESPN insider Brian Windhorst reported that the Boston Celtics will "most likely" offer the former Duke star a max contract this offseason. Well, things just got interesting.

"If Jayson Tatum is the superstar that they envisioned when they began this whole rebuilding process when they traded Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce for all of those draft picks hoping to land a player like this, we could see 'Glory Days' for the Celtics again," Windhorst said on SportsCenter. "But it's very much up in the air, and I'm gonna tell ya, they're gonna have to pay him like it because after this season ends, he is going to get most likely a max contract. They're going to bet that he becomes that player."
Windhorst throwing around terms like "if" is pretty funny when you consider that most basketball analysts consider Tatum a superstar already. At 22 years old, he's already one of the NBA's most polished scorers. On top of that, he's the Celtics' go-to player in crunch time.
When the current campaign was halted due to the spread of the coronavirus, the former No. 3 overall pick was averaging 23.6 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game while shooting 44.8% from the floor and 39.8% on 3-pointers.

It won't be long before Tatum starts receiving MVP votes, so Boston signing him to a max contract makes perfect sense. Assuming play resumes, the 2020 All-Star could potentially add more zeroes to that deal if he manages to lead the Celtics to a deep playoff run, so stay tuned.
