Brodie Van Wagenen Absolutely Needs to Use Money From Yoenis Cespedes Renegotiation

General manager Brodie Van Wagenen relieved a plethora of Mets fans when it was announced that the organization agreed to an amended contract with outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

Until Saturday, it was only reported that Cespedes' original $29.5 million salary would shrink below $10 million. Well, the latest update indicates that figure is now set at a paltry $6 million, though the two-time All-Star can make up to $14 million in incentives.

While this should be viewed as a W for the Flushing faithful, they shouldn't let Van Wagenen off that easily.

The Mets' second-year GM absolutely needs to flip the funds he received from Cespedes' rectified contract into another free agent signing or two. That concept becomes even more demanding when you realize how little New York has done in free agency thus far.

Are Mets fans really supposed to be pleased with Rick Porcello, Michael Wacha, and Jake Marisnick? When nothing has been done to address their laughable bullpen?

No way. A world-beater like Dellin Betances, a New York native, is just out there waiting to be signed. Letting him walk to the rival Phillies after Saturday's news regarding Cespedes would set Queens on fire.

We're not implying that the GM only set his sights on Betances, but something must be done in the wake of saving (potentially) $23.5 million.

You set the win-now standard, Brodie. It's time to put your money where your mouth is.
