Brodie Van Wagenen Announces Punishment for Mickey Callaway and Jason Vargas
By Charles Nason
After an altercation occurred between a member of the media, Newsday's Tim Healey, and Mets skipper Mickey Callaway and pitcher Jason Vargas, the team has finally handed down some punishments.
Tensions ran high in the clubhouse following the Mets loss to the Cubs Sunday evening. Callaway cursed at Healey after misinterpreting what he believed to be a snide remark, while Vargas threatened physical violence against the reporter. The Mets duo will not be suspended, however the team has fined them both for their actions.
General manger Brodie Van Wagenen's assessment of the altercation is accurate, but he wisely leaves out how embarrassing the situation is for the organization.
After the incident, the Mets have claimed that they will be holding team meetings to teach players how to deal with the media. Back to the basics in Flushing, it seems.
Van Wagenen has every right to be disappointed in the pair. Both have brought significant negative attention to the organization, at a time when the Mets least needed it, and have proven they don't know how to responsibly handle interactions with the media, nor control their temper.
There hasn't been any word of whether or not the MLB will hand down additional discipline to Callaway or Vargas, but it would not be too surprising if they did.
